Engelman captured this scene somewhere near Lake Eyre South in 2009. She tells us she fell to her knees and cried so overtaken was she by the emotion of the experience.

Recognition of Joy Engelman's contribution to the arts continues to grow with inclusion in an important art history book by Roslynn Hayne, Adjunct Assoc Prof of Arts and the Media at UNSW.  This unique book is a pivotal study of the Australian Desert and its value and influence on the cultural development of Australia.

Joy Engelman is a well known artist who has lived in the Central West of New South Wales in Australia for most of her life. Her arts career spans over 50 years and she has been awarded and exhibited many, many times here in Australia and overseas.
A 30 year survey of her work was held in Gallery One at the Orange Regional Gallery in 2010.

She has explored the back roads and wild places since her mother started taking her on journeys as a child and has painted with a love of Australia's bushland and outback over the years.

Engelman’s interests lay in the use and abuse of the environment as she has watched with dismay the desecration and loss of forest, waterways and landscape over her life. She has observed mans increasing impingement on the natural world through agriculture, mining and deforestation with increasing alarm.

A collaborative work with Ngairi (Nyree) Reynolds hangs in the Department of the Environment in Canberra having been purchased by the Director of the Dept of Climate Change in 2007, an artwork that belongs to the Dept.

Now semi-retired, she works on her art diligently when inspired and feeling the creative urge rise and desire to be meditative.

Engelman was brought to international attention when she was awarded a Medici Medal in Florence, Italy in 2007 at the Biennale dell Art'e di Contemporanea and since then has been invited to exhibit in many international shows. The ones that Engelman has chosen to be a part of are focused on environmental issues and peace, issues that are close to her heart and her art.

Niagara Falls History Museum Canada 2024-25

Haegeumgang Theme Museum South Korea 2024
